The Trench Dress

The trench coat was developed as an alternative to the heavy serge greatcoats worn by British and French soldiers in the First World War. Thomas Burberry, the inventor of gabardine fabric, submitted a design for an army officer's raincoat to the United Kingdom War Office in 1901 and it became an optional dress item in the British Army. The trench coat was not only resistant to extreme wet weathers, it has also become a timeless classic.

Summer doesn't mean style has to be sacrificed. I was elated when Dressabelle brought in this trench coat inspired dress - breathable, sleeveless, pockets for your hands like how you would slot them in the winter. This dress has all the elements of the classic trench yet it's realistic be worn in Singapore.

No one can deny that cream is an universally flattering colour for all skin tones. Thomas Burberry must be a genius.

Snowflake prints are so last (last) Christmas but....I'm beginning to like winter-ish looking knit wear and may even consider going on a shopping spree just to get basic knits in 5 different shades. What was I thinking when I thought sweaters were unattractive?! My mom gave me this sweater/dress and it has been my go-to dress for school if I run way too late. It's so fuzzy and comfortable and probably the closest thing to wrapping myself in cotton wool.

Happy 2 years anniversary to Nigel and I! Finally took some time out together after weeks of rushing deadlines and tests. To spend our special day together, we went to see the Dreams and Reality art exhibition.

I feel privileged to see so many masterpieces in the National Museum of Singapore (Ticketing details here) without having to fly all the way to Paris.

"The exhibition explores the reaction of man towards modernity at the turn of the century from 1848 to 1914. The changing social and industrial landscapes of Paris in early modernity forced artists and photographers to rethink their approach to the visual world around them. Their varied responses generated new ways of depicting reality and a proliferation of styles."

The exhibition is divided in themes such as war, solitude and mythology. France went through many upheavals including industrialisation, the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71) and the start of first world war. These influenced the artists of that period, who sought to express their worldview or escape from it through their art. Majority of the paintings were done by oil on canvas. Here are some of my favourites:

Venus at Paphos by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (source)

Sorry for the nudity. At the first glance this reminds me of Eve in the Garden of Eden. According to description, the artist intentionally drew her back more arched than it should be (pay attention to where her left shoulder is positioned) for an erotic effect. I also loved how the blurred features of the child gave a dream-like quality. Some sources mentioned the artist drew the stolen 'head' (daughter of a wealthy client he painted - with clothes on) with an imaginary body and scene. Talk about photoshop in the past...

Young Girl and Death by Marianna Stokes (source)

This painting was originally shaped this way; I can't help but to notice those arched wings and arched bed frames too. The two main colours red and black represents blood and death. Perhaps I have an obsession with arched things (that explains my JC Lana Fabs). A young girl is taken by surprise in her sleep by 'Death', flowers on the side table are withered and this painting shall remain vivid in my memory forever.

This painting was based on France's defeat by Prussia in 1870. The background shows France fumed by its enemies canon. Under the dark sky a winged woman, probably the embodiment of france is asking the sphinx for answers but it remained silent. I was so visually shocked and overwhelmed by this particular art piece.

Be sure to make a visit ASAP before it's gone on 5 Feb 2012! Try to avoid weekends if you want to really enjoy because the crowd was massive. I think it rekindled my love for paintings as a child! I'm still learning to appreciate art but I'm definitely seeing more this year.

Later in the day, Nigel brought me to this high- end furniture store named SPACE located near Sunshine Plaza. Didn't take any pictures because we were way too engrossed in the ridiculously well designed (and priced) furniture. I also discovered this furniture line called, MOOOI; I love it so much that I unknowingly used some of them in my interior design assignment.

We spent our night dining at an inexpensive food court in Sentosa. It's right where the USS globe is. The indoor food court offers traditional local cuisine in an olden street concept, pretty cool if you ask me! Saves money too.

I have an unhealthy obsession with lace and leather. In terms of fashion, I do believe that opposites attract. While lace is feminine and intricate, leather is its perfect partner to toughen things up. This Regale Lace dress from Dressabelle has lace all over! I am very inspired by fashion throughout the Victorian Era, no amount of dresses will ever be enough to justify my love for lace.

Okay so let's just say I'm a rebel for footwear. I've always loved wearing dresses/ skirts with sneakers, and there is nothing wrong with it. I hate it when people come up to me and say I should have paired my dress with flats/ sandals/ heels instead. IDGAF.

This average looking sweater does not attract compliments. In fact, I thought it was quite ugly at the first sight. My mom questioned if the sweater even belonged to me. I don't know; maybe it's the wool that resembles an old potato sack, perhaps the shapeless fit that is too boyish. But for strange reasons this sweater is so appealing to me as a whole, I love how it gives me the freedom to move about comfortably. I paired the socks to the stripes across my sweater to bring the whole look together.

The Descendants is a really good movie by the way! Watched it today with Nigel. If you're considering then you certainly should!

This lunar new year was a plain one for me. Unlike the majority of Singaporeans, I only have one family of relatives to visit. The rest are located in Shanghai and Hong Kong. As a kid of a migrant family, CNY always make me feel pretty lonely to be honest. The first day of CNY (chu yi), I lazed my day away with three awful movies and pineapple tarts.

I really envy people with big families. I mean, I don't even know my cousins! During occasions like Hari Raya, Malay families go around visiting in matching costumes. What a heartwarming sight? Why would anyone complain about visiting? Occasionally I would see tweets about how my friends are 'suffering' from questions posed by nosey relatives. Some complain about how bored they are sitting around old folks. Hey, I'm should be the one feeling bored, not you!

Maybe the grass will always be greener on the other side. Count your blessings.

'Brocade' means rich fabric; indeed, the material of this dress feels like my curtain! And the floral patterns reminds me of the Victorian art. (Cath Kidston, anyone?)

An all black assemble with silver as embellishment. This dress I'm wearing belonged to two other ladies before me - my mom and a family friend. It has been passed around but the velvet quality remains. It's a little plain on the neckline so I couldn't resist adding on a metal collar necklace. As for shoes.... This week, I picked out Dressabelle's Lattice Cut-out dress in sand. The first thing that caught my attention was its unique cut-out design that reminded me of Nacho chips!

Okay, I'm not talking about a LBD right here. Let's rebel a little and welcome a little WHITE dress, instead, into our wardrobes.

White often appears more casual as compared to a LBD thus making it daytime appropriate. Besides, white reflects light to our skin and make us look more radiant.

This Lattice cut-out dress has a well structured flare and clinch at all the right places.

Let me show you some of the outfits I easily achieved with this little white dress! There are tons of options, so just work with what you have. :)

Look 1 - Office appropriate

Don't be a culprit to a sea of black office wear! It doesn't hurt to wear something different and brighten the office environment.

All I did here was to layer a cream button-up blouse underneath to show less skin. The collars of the shirt gives this dress an entirely different silhouette, but still in harmony because the dress and the shirt belongs to the same colour family.

Look 2 - Attending an event

Wearing a skirt over a dress is one of my favourite ways to layer. Besides, the cut-out details are too gorgeous to not wear as a top. Same goes to girls who own shift/ floral/ lace dresses - you can do the same too!

I wore a basic maxi skirt on top of my dress to elongate my legs. This method works like magic on petite girls. Then, for accessories I added earrings, feather hairband, a clutch and some metallic bangles. Basically, wear whatever that attracts attention and gives you that 'bling'! It's all about the details.

Colourful, fancy accessories work well on a muted outfit.

Look 3 - Safari/ Military

This look is for the "girly goes tough". I personally adore the military trend and other masculine pieces. For some reason, olive/ army green compliments my skin tone very well. Green doesn't appear very much appealing to me but it works!

For this look, balancing masculine and feminine pieces is important. Since this dress is very girly, I pieced it with an oversized army green shirt. An utility jacket or leather vest works as well. Then, I added a belt to redefine my waist line (very important!). Pulled my hair up to reduce fuss and paired leather and wood accessories.

Don't really know when and how my obsession with anything leather started out. From wallets to shoes and clothes...I love the muted shine of leather, especially textured ones (ostrich, reptile, python).

Scored this expensive looking pair of pumps at less than $30 from my favourite local shoe store. How could I let this go? It looks almost similar to Valentino's. Can't believe pointy pumps could go so well with metal studs. It has a metallic thin heel. The patches of 'rust' are part of the design in case you're wondering.

And let me tell you about this bag I've been carrying with me WAYYY too much. I call it the crocodile bag! It's a messenger bag that's about the area of an iPad. Trust me, it's time to change your mind because their newer lines of bags are pretty well designed! It's a local brand and their quality has yet to disappoint me. Go see their range of bags if you're free this weekend! You'll be surprised.

A walk at Queenstown

Today I made a visit to Queenstown with Nigel. That's where my secondary school is located, and where my boyfriend and I met!

I wanted to see if the entire area has really changed - buildings getting demolished. It really did. For a moment I was really upset over the drastic changes to that place, how my favourite hawker centre is gone and mad at myself why I didn't make a trip back earlier.

I'm wearing Dressabelle's Peter Pan dress in Nude. At first I was resistant to wearing such a girly dress but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone! The dress is much better in reality - it features a pleated front and hidden zippers at the back. It comes along with a complimenting red ribbon, perfect for chinese new year!

Again, Dressabelle has never failed to offer dresses with inner lining, something that I ALWAYS look for in a dress. Especially light-coloured ones. Cheers for conservative dresses!

Something I learnt from experience:

For Asians, we look better with anything off-white - e.g. cream, ivory, nude pinks. Pure bleached white tends to make us look darker and more 'yellow' when worn. So, unless you want to look dark intentionally, avoid pure white pieces. :)

I'm crazy about the Peter Pan collars! They look adorable when worn against a contrasting cardigan, even from the back. I love how the collars make a subtle appearance on top of my cardigan.

At times I really do miss secondary school life and the people I used to see. There used to be a block '6 C' just beside my school, a place where gangsters used to fight. My experience with ASOS

Just want to dedicate a this entry to praise ASOS for their acts of service that are truly commendable.

Background
About 3 months ago I made my first ever order from ASOS. During the week of expected delivery, I realized that my address entered in my account was incorrect - it lacked my unit number. I panicked and wrote tons of messages to ASOS hoping for a miracle that my parcel will magically reach my place anyway.

Long story short:

1. ASOS has a flawless communication system
ASOS made a promise somewhere on their website that all emails will be attended to within 4 hours. And they did. I received all replies within 3 hours. Good job!

However, my parcel was nowhere to be found.... BUT,

2. ASOS refunded me in full
Just because I waited patiently and asked if my parcel has returned to their warehouse. (which it didn't by the way). My parcel is supposed to be in the hands of SingPost once it lands in Singapore. So who to blame? SINGPOST. WHY YOU NO RETURN MY PARCEL?!

ASOS's email to me

Even in emails, I was treated so courteously with full sentences. Why would any online business in the world refund me in full when my parcel is not even proved to be really missing? And by making sure all emails to be replied within 4 hours it means people work around the clock?!

I want everyone to see that THIS is what good service is supposed to be. I am truly impressed by ASOS although it's merely virtual interaction and my parcel failed to reach me anyway. If by any chance any staff from ASOS is reading this, THANK YOU SO MUCH. :)

Lessons learnt

1. Check your address again and again before checking out
Yes, very important! Do not use auto-fill for filling in of addresses. Watch out for address blanks that states 'Address line 1' and 'Address line 2' - you're supposed to see your full address without having to scroll right for extra hidden words (if you know what I mean)

2. Good service goes a long way

How was everyone's new year's eve? I had a feast at Desiree's place, steamboat at Nigel's, watched sad movies on my own and caught up with my good friends. I love cozy gatherings, but decided to see the nightlife scene at Clark Quay this NYE. There were people that were passed out, people who danced on the bridge blasting music from portable stereo, people who ran and hugged random strangers - what a sight!

I used to write down new year resolutions for myself during secondary school days but I no longer do so. It used to be things like "achieve Gold award for fitness exam"; that was somewhat predictable and I knew that it'll happen one day since it's compulsory by MOE. Right now, I feel like my life is unpredictable and free-going. I'm driven by instant rewards and do whatever that passion pushes me to. I easily forget tasks that will only reward in a long run (e.g. academic work/ sleep) and it's bad, that's tunnel vision.

Steve Jobs once mentioned something like, "in life, you can only connect the dots when you look backwards.." during his commencement speech at Stanford University . I strongly agree with him. I only realize what I have achieved as I reflect upon all the things I have achieved in the past year. Things include starting out this blog, LookBook, worked with Carrie Models, worked with Dressabelle (extremely grateful for this opportunity), took up Bible Study again. At the end of the day, you just need to hold yourself together, get help from the right people and faith. Yes, faith, keep believing in yourself. You don't have to wait for the new year to set your resolutions, right?

Have a happy 2012 everyone!

This wine coloured double zipper shorts has to be my favourite thing to wear this festive season. Self-manufactured by The Scarlet Room, its superior quality gave me a pleasant surprise considering the amount I paid for ($29.90). It's well lined and the leather very smooth. Such a joy!

I absolutely adore animal print pants. I own one in python print. Those pants usually come in middle rise and three quarter length; not only it prevents a spillage of a muffin top, they show off your cute shoes at the same time!

More often than not the print will look pretty striking so try to stick with plain tops and shoes that does not compete for attention with your pants. I also find pairing pointed shoes with cigarette cut pants extra attractive. Seems like those Audrey Hepburn style pumps are making a return for 2012.

I cannot agree enough with this statement. I spend hours shopping for all the trendiest outfits but why do I end up with almost nothing to wear for school?

Because I have not stocked up enough on basics.

As strange as it may sound, my favourite pieces from my wardrobe are my old blue jeans, my Vans sneakers and that black cotton tee. They are my go-tos when I'm running late, they are the ones that match anything and everything and leaves me comfortable at the end of the day. They aren't attractive nor fancy, but there's something about basics that I never ever get bored of.

Bias-cut Tux dress by Dressabelle

Dressabelle's asymmetrical dress was the perfect choice for me. It features a button down collar that is flattering for all but what makes it not-so-basic is that slanted hem. It's flowy without being overly drapey. And don't worry ladies, it comes with a inner slip! (Dressabelle is really considerate when it comes to dressing modestly I promise.)

The Bias-cut Tux dress looks stunning on its own. But I'm going to show you 3 looks that I dressed myself up with using other basic pieces that most people already own.

Look 1: Accessorize

Hey, don't tell me you don't have accessories? Personally, I love black and silver jewelry in metallic finish. That's just my preference.

I wore my some bangles, put on a studded belt and a collar necklace for an interesting neckline. And of course, a hot pink lipstick (MAC Cremesheen lipstick in Speak Louder) really helped brighten up my dark assemble.

Look 2: Wear a dress as a skirt

Who says dresses are not versatile? All I did to make my dress a skirt was adding a plain sweater. Then, I accentuated my waistline with a thin belt and there you have it - an asymmetrical skirt! The white sweater made my outfit look neat and classy. Besides, it kept me warm and cozy against the cool breeze.

Look 3: Feeling festive

Convert the knee-length dress to a maxi by layering another skirt beneath! The greatest thing about chiffon is its sheer texture that allows other colours/prints to show through.

I chose a pleated velvet full skirt in red that added a dash of colour to my black dress.

Boarding the 'Titanic' as actual passengers in the past

Nigel and I finally spent a well deserved vacation together, to celebrate our year together as a couple, to pamper ourselves with the humble amount of savings we have accumulated. I think it's really important we allocate quality time since we're so busy with school and various commitments.

Our mini getaway was well spent in a boutique hotel Wanderlust. It appears as an average looking Peranakan style house but don't underestimate what it has to offer. We were well taken of to every minor detail; the room was well equipped with everything despite limited spaces. I especially loved the instant coffee machine - perfect for a coffee addict like me.

We also visited the 100th anniversary Titanic exhibition. One of our favourite things to do is visiting museums/ exhibitions! And let me tell you, it's a MUST. If you watched Titanic as a child, you'll definitely be able to relate better to Titanic. The exhibition was really informative and emotional. It tells a complete story, unlike the movie, it puts you in the shoes of many victims who lost their lives. As cheesy as it may sound, I even teared at this quote that was displayed in the exhibition:

"We have lived together for many years. Wherever my husband goes, I go."

That is love.

Anyway, if you happen to be interested, the Titanic exhibition is at MBS Arts and Science Museum, opens daily from 10am to 10pm. Tickets are priced at $24 but OCBC card holders get a 20% off.

I'm never a boot-cut girl but I guess I made an exception just yesterday while casually shopping in Forever 21. I'm normally in my skinnies but these pants, my goodness!

It's flowly, comfortable and made really long so it's meant to go with high platforms. I'm so in love with its exaggerated bell-bottom that surprisingly seems to make my legs look thinner than usual.

Reversible blazer from Dressabelle

The weather was cool enough to allow layers, so I wore a blazer that's more geometrically cut. It's longer on the front and short at the back - allowing my girly chiffon top to flow perfectly.

My first makeup tutorial showing you how to do your eye makeup with natural colours. I specially recorded this video to answer some of the questions I get often:

Remember, there are always exceptions! You don't have to use the exact products I use. Use whatever you have. The most important thing you should grasp is the placement of eyeshadow.

Dressabelle is a local online boutique that carries stylish, comfortable pieces at really good prices. The first thing I noticed about Dressabelle's apparel was their quality and details. I am very fussy when shopping online because I know how deceiving pictures can be as compared to the real deal. What looks stunning on the model may not look as good on me.

I noticed that most Dressabelle dresses are of appropriate length for work. Did you know that the most flattering length of your skirt is about a inch above your knees? Dressabelle did it! I love how most of their dresses are perfect on their own, unlike other dresses that require a slip or exposed your undies so what's the point right?

This basic swing skirt is more than what you see. It has attached inner safety shorts! Brilliant! Who would have thought of that? Get it before they're on, and you'll never have to worry when wearing a mini skirt :)

Dressabelle got me to pick out two pieces from their collections, one of which is a tartan dress! To me, tartan usually comes in the form of mini skirts that I instantly associate with Scotland or Japanese school girl. But this one, don't you think it's so modern? The traditional tartan print now goes on a classic shift dress, giving that flattering, silhouette for all body types. This dress also comes with a matching belt to clinch my waist to create more curves.

Layering

How to layer? Singapore may seem too hot to layer almost anything but trust me, it's not when you layer on the right stuff! Especially during this rainy season, the more we girls should take full advantage. You know those few dresses in your wardrobe that doesn't look attractive anymore? They are perfect for this purpose!

I'm nowhere near pro to teach you but if you have the time, watch the video below by Chriselle, a fashion stylist teaching you how to wear the exact 7 pieces for 14 different looks simply by layering. Amazing?

Let me summarize some key points for you:

When layering, always focus on proportion, contrast and material - to create visual interest and depth.

Always layer from thin to thick materials as you proceed.

Use a neutral piece of accessory (e.g. brown belt) to create curves or tone down (e.g. nude shoes) a colourful outfit.

Neutral colours may be nude/ black/ ivory or even grey.

Lastly, my own input - tie hair into a bun because I can't stand the heat!

1. I layered a super light weight chiffon blouse (mom's) above my dress. I chose a blue blouse because the shade matches with the navy blue blocks on my dress.

2. I love my studded leather jacket to death and wear it way too often in pictures. One of my favourite ways to wear leather is with chiffon because the texture compliments each other perfectly.

3. Lastly, shoes and accessories! Put on my leather combat boots (which coincidentally has tartan printed inside) and studded cuff.

Done!

I love seeing people's interiors and nosing into their possessions. I love to see the kind of environment people live in day-to-day.

Dulce Candy (yes, her real name) is one of the first few people I followed on YouTube in attempt to learn makeup. She used to be a female soldier who fought for Iraq! Three years have passed, she's now happily married, a mother of one, studying as a fashion student, a freelance makeup artist, fashion blogger and designer. Makes me wonder how does she even have the time and energy to film and record videos for her loyal audiences. The most amazing part is, she's only in her early 20s and has laid out her life in such perfect manner. She constantly mentions in her videos that she doesn't let her height (4 ft 9") get in the way at all when she dresses up.

Sorry for the lack of updates!

Last week was crazy! I had 2 makeup appointments to attend to in the week and common tests to study for. ON TOP OF THAT, my church friends and I are rehearsing like crazy for a very special Christmas drama+musical. Last week was also a difficult time at home for me, but I'm glad God has been really gracious to me and pulled me through. Anyway, let me know if you wanna come, I'd be happy to have you around this Christmas! :) 100% festive, guaranteed!

1. Prom night

Prepping young(er) girls for their prom night makes me miss mine two years ago. We were all merely teenagers awaiting our dreams to come true, to have a good time and get into a good school. Nobody knew what was coming, and then everyone went separate ways. Prom night was one of the most memorable moments for me in secondary school. I don't understand why anyone would want to not go for prom. It's really a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I barely even see most of my secondary friends anymore :( All that remains a memory.

Tell me which girl wears creepers to prom?! Who?! None other than Dione Keh! This girl is mad but I love her so much, she never fails to lighten everyone's mood with her cheeky self. ^^

I always wondered if it'll be possible to wear unconventional footwear with my wedding gown - like sneakers in runaway bride. That's just a thought.

2. Collaboration with Flesh Imp

I got the chance to be involved in a project/ collaboration with Flesh Imp last Friday. If you didn't know already, Flesh Imp offers edgy fashion inspired by the urban subculture for both genders, and very friendly on the wallet!

I had so much fun working with Flesh Imp, the models and makeup artists. We made the whole event possible despite the rain! I'm not going to reveal too much information as it's not released yet, so be patient! I can't wait to share!

Nicole has really exotic/ feline features so I really wanted to emphasize the shape of her eyes with smokey hues and natural lashes. I left her lips pale nude to contrast with the smokey eyes as well as to draw attention to her skin colour, flawless complexion.

Urgh this was taken with my iPhone in tungsten lighting so the picture really don't do enough justice >:( For Nelia, I used hot pink eyeshadow (yeah I know you can't tell) to carve our her crease and a little liner cause her eyes are so huge already!

Apartment Gaga

Just one week ago, I completed my interior design module over a time span of half a semester. Never looked back! In case you're wondering what I'm doing as a business student, my polytechnic allows us to take up certain modules that's completely irrelevant to my course of study.

I have always loved designing, drawing and customizing so the module was for me. Interior design is like playing Sims 3 on a whole new level - you get to customize every single inch of your apartment and furniture to the way you want it.

The final assessment of the module was to design an apartment for Lady Gaga. Here's what I came up with!

Yesterday I had the chance to be around to shoot with Krystof from Carrie Models. The location was at Sentosa cause the model and photographer wanted the 'raw' theme. I guess we take our sunny island for granted. While Singaporeans always complain non-stop whether it's rain or shine, Krystof told me he came to Singapore to build his portfolio because he thinks Singapore is great for pictures!

I was researching and getting inspiration for today's shoot when I came across this video. Yes I'm working on a male model again if you're wondering! Can't wait to share!

In the video you'll see big, grown men (Francisco Lachowski is one of them) with their hair clipped in place and skin prepped to perfection. Pretty interesting in my opinion. Have you ever wondered if guys wore makeup? Yes, a lot of them do! Mostly for events, runway shows. Did you know even presidents wear makeup during important events or when they have to appear on TV? If you see a significantly lighter ring under the eyes then you know that's a bad makeup job.

Well, for my case, it's on my shoes!

For the first time I wore my JCs out in public. Those insane platforms made me 1.8m tall instantly and attracted so much attention. It was drizzling but I didn't care. The shoes is a dream to walk in once you get used to it, though a little care is needed on uneven ground.

It's a love-hate relationship for me. They're perfect and worth every single cent I paid for, however a little out of my comfort zone. Can't emphasize enough how they look so much bigger in reality! I get very uncomfortable and paranoid when people start staring, but I can't blame them cause it's sort of like asked for with JC shoes.

Eyes - Urban Decay's 15th anniversary palette.

Using Urban Decay shadows for the first time! Makes me want to toss all my other cheap eyeshadows because the pigmentation is so freaking good! So blendable and vibrant, I'm pretty sure it's good on its own without any eyeshadow base.

Lips - MAC lipstick in Creme De Nude (Cremesheen), a very sheer nude colour that allows your natural lip colour to show through. I won't recommend this for people with dark lips!

I have been doing all sorts of makeup work since four years ago or so. Never had a proper collection of stuff arranged in chronological order, but luckily I never failed to take a picture or two. So here's my advice to all aspiring artists out there: ALWAYS keep a record of your work and stay honest. Your work is precious. Trust me, you'll see how you progress.

I am so proud to show the world my portfolio. I don't care if anybody is going to book me for service, Every single picture came from a little inspiration, continuous self-motivation and tons of hard work. Not just from me, but the models, the photographers. Yes, especially the photographer. Special thanks to Stuart. The photographer is the one carrying the heaviest equipments, tolerating extreme weathers just to catch a perfect shot, and the one staying up all night just to edit the photos.

I'm sick of doing work for free. Artists are not cheap labour, or worse, free. Artists don't owe you a single thing. In fact, you should be grateful for everything beautiful in this world all for God and the existence of talented creators. Just like any other person, artists need to work hard for a living. Just like any other, they've got bills to pay.

High Tea

The Peranakan Museum is tucked along Armenian street, right beside Substation, a 5 minutes walk from Bras Basah Station. The stand alone block features 10 galleries, 9 of which made permanent. The special gallery features Peranakan fashion - the Sarong Kebaya.

I think it's a pretty interesting museum to visit. It's unlike those museums that bombard you with history and names, those I remember visiting as a primary school student. The exhibits display everything from lifestyle to food and fashion. Some are interactive, like picking up a telephone to hear what Babas used to gossip about. Admission is free for all Singaporean students and teachers!

I recently splurged on a Topshop dress. I rarely buy anything from Topshop, it's too expensive to me. But THIS. I fell in love the moment on saw it, even more when I tried on and the velvet weighs itself down perfectly on my body. It matches easily and feels super comfortable.

What's with the recent hype over high tea? So answer my own curiosity, I decided to give it a try today! Also, it's meant to be a surprise for Nigel's birthday treat. I rarely choose dining places (because I don't love food) so Nigel was elated when I brought him here.

Before he knew I was bringing him for high tea:

Me: "We're going for something yummy now, so let's have cheap dinner okay?"

Nigel: "Whaaatt?? I thought we're eating good food? Then what we eat for dinner?!"

Shows how much he doesn't trust me when it comes to food. He probably expected me to bring him to Macdonalds or something. SIGH.

Super alluring cupcakes (that we didn't try)

Everywhere was filled with angels, vintage furniture and artsy decor! Some paper crafts are for sale at the counter. The ambience is really cozy. I'm the type of person who hates loud background music and tight dining spaces. But Tea Cosy is thoughtfully planned out in every way - music soft enough to encourage conversation, tables placed far enough to not overhear someone else. Also (very important), temperature was just right and the cafe is adequately lit. Very comfy!

We went for the High Tea set for 2 - $29.95+ that includes:
1 seafood set
1 non-seafood set
2 scones
3 miniature cakes
2 beverages (English breakfast tea)

My thoughts:
The food is delicious. Really. Nothing is too sweet or salty. The scones were served with butter, cream cheese and blueberry jam. The miniature cakes taste rich with just about the right amount of sweetness. Everything is presented nicely, with the tea served with sugar cubes and separate tea pots. Felt like a scene in Alice in Wonderland!

My only complain would be the serving. Don't go there expecting your stomach to be filled. It will not. Every item stated on the menu is literally bite-sized, gone in a second or two. So do have a nice meal before you go for high tea! However for the ambience, service and taste, I think paying thirty dollars for two is overall worthwhile. I'd definitely go back again.

Yep, not surprising right. I go through phases when it comes to dressing up. For a moment I was mad in love with anything tough and military looking, the next moment I find myself digging a pile of vintage blouses in the salvation army store. And then I feel ridiculous wearing something that attracts too much attention.

Now I'm back to my 'norm'. Anything black, white of various texture and finish; leather, velvet, tons of jewelry, smokey eyes etc. I always end up coming back to the same things. Taylor will always remain an inspiration to me.

My 18th Birthday

So I'm going to blog about my birthday after one whole week of awesome-ness! I had a wonderful birthday with my friends. I got so many surprises and wishes, can't thank everyone enough who made this possible. My past one week was definitely memorable.

Dinner with my favourite people

Tiramisu cake. Looks like someone doesn't know how to spell 'Birthday'.

On my 18th birthday, I had the first Bakerzin cake in my life. I don't remember having great cakes when I was young. I love cheese cake, ice-cream cake and Tiramisu. Bakerzin impressed me for staying fresh and delicious to consume after 3 whole days stay in my fridge.

Had a sumptuous birthday dinner at Thai Express with my closest circle of friends. So grateful for the company, considering they're all busy people so it's extremely difficult for us to meet in the week.

Awww...! My mom revealed that Nigel was decorating my room when I was still in school. He hung a whole bunch of photos, held with heart shaped paper clips, hid pictures all over my room (wardrobe, drawers etc), left small cards which took me awhile to find and placed a box of presents in between my shoes. I'm never going to take that down.

As for the girls, they surprised me with a hand-made box filled with goodies. They're all practical stuff - e.g. makeup, portable phone charger, notebook and accessories.

Had Thai food (again) at our favourite Thai restaurant, Jai Thai. They provide great Thai cuisines that are home-cooked style at reasonable prices. It's located along Purvis street (about 10 mins walk from City Hall), do check it out if you love Thai food as much as I do!

My classmates surprised me with something I also wanted...The Urban Decay 15th anniversary eyeshadow palette. OH MY GOD. I was literally jumping and screaming when I got them. The product was packaged in a box in paper in a box. Does it make any sense? I love unwrapping presents ^^

The palette features mostly neutral, wearable shades and 4 very intense colours. All appear shinnery except for Blackout. I haven't got the chance to try them out so far because I'm so busy. I have not tried swatching them on my arms as well cause I can't bear to destroy the smooth velvety surface of the brand new shadows... Anyone goes through this feeling when trying out new makeup as well?

Riders Cafe

My dear boy Nigel brought me out for a date on Sunday. He was so sweet to surprise me at my doorstep and take me out to places though he was unwell. He also refused to tell me where we were heading and just told me to follow him. :')

Finally got to see Riders Cafe! Heart that it's super inaccessible - deeply hidden in the woods of Bukit Timah. Had to hail a cab in and out, so ideally a car would be best. But it's so worth it when we finally reached our destination

Like the name suggests, the place is somewhat like a chill out dining place for riders. You can eat and watch horses walking around their pen, so peaceful to watch! Dining sheltered without air conditioner.

Sick boy :(

We chose a table along the edge of the elevated cafe block so we could enjoy the view as we dine! It's breathtaking. We were surrounded by greenery and horse tracks. I'd say the food is average and slightly expensive to me - Nigel and I only tried the calamari and soft shell crab starters, $13 for each.

Went ahead to do my nails earlier this week to pamper myself. It's only my third manicure throughout my entire life!

My first was a french manicure for prom night, from Milly's of Far East Plaza and the service was expensive yet disappointing. That was 2 years ago. And then I never went for manicures till recently, I was introduced to Cinderella (level 4 if I'm not wrong) from Far East Plaza. I'm so happy with their results! An express manicure costs only $4 for student; does everything from cutting, shaping, base coat, colour to top coat. Customized designs are at $6.

I'm so upset that I have to remove it right now because I'll be working this weekend and Loreal only allows light coloured nails. :(

Making a little storage

I'm running out of face powder so I did a little shopping and...I decided to get Maybelline's Pure Mineral two-way Cake! Finally got my hands on this skin loving foundation.

Some of you would have known that I work part time for Loreal (and Maybelline). During my work, I would try out products after products and this has caught my attention since its launch early this year. Mineral makeup in pressed form? Incredible! Never will I experience 'powder-works' in the morning as I do my makeup.

I have not tried on the product on my face yet but the product seems to be extra fine when blended onto the back of my hand (as compared to my current - ZA). Shall do a review in the near future.

Anyway, for those who are interested in this two-way cake, get it now! You will find them in most drugstores along with a limited edition foundation case! Plus, it's retailing for $19.90 which means the foundation case comes free. Original packaging sells the case and refill separately.

I really love the packaging. Call me a hoarder if you want, I guiltily admit finding difficulty in throwing away boxes (especially perfume boxes)...

But guess what, I can make them useful instead, right? E.g. I use used tissue boxes as compartments in my drawer. Let's just say I'm doing my part for the environment!

How to make a lipstick holder:

From left to right:

1. Measure the centre of box and draw a continuing straight line on all sides.
2. Cut 3 sides of the box, leaving one side untouched.
3. Secure loose parts with clear tape.
4. Choose a wrapping paper. For my case, I tore out a page from Cath Kidston magazine.
5. Wrap your box like as if you would for a present.
6. For a finishing touch, I used green tape to conceal the exposing white part.

You're done!

I was overjoyed and at shock when I got my very first pair of JCs. I've spent over year admiring the classic Litas in every style imaginable, on Lookbook, blogs, streets etc. Can't describe how happy I am to finally wear my very own.

The prettiest shoe box I have ever seen in my life.

Why this? When there are so many other styles out there? In fact, the Cosmic Lita was on top of my list! I also loved Clinic and maybe Maddow for every day wear. But I simply couldn't resist the combination of kitties and that curved heel. I knew I had to get it.

The shoes are larger than expected. They are very heavy (heavier than Dmarts) and bulky looking. The volume and shape will make everyone's feet look bigger. Boyfriend says it's shaped like a lobster claw and I had to agree! These shoes is not for everyone. For a moment I was wondering if I could ever wear them out to take a bus or walk along the streets of my neighborhood without looking awkward.

Details of shoe:

For me, the sizing runs bigger by 1 US size. So I am a true US8.5 (EUR39) and ordered mine at US9 cause there wasn't half size. My shoes are 1cm bigger but was minimized by tightening of laces. Therefore, if you are getting your own and in doubt, go half a size smaller! Go half size up if you have wide feet. :)

JC Lana Fab is 5 inches tall with 2 inches platform. With the additional help of cuffed ankles, laces and chunky heel, my shoes are extremely comfortable to walk in. I'm not even lying, even my mom tried on and said it's comfy! Mom described them as "Lady Gaga shoes". The shoes has inner leather sole and lining. I do wish that the heels were darker and stacked instead of the light brown. Besides this there is nothing else I can complain about!

I get so thrilled just by thinking of outfits to go with. It's a really daring design so I'd probably go with maxi skirts or jeans with a plain top and outerwear. These shoes go better with legs covered in my opinion.

In case you're wondering. I purchased my shoes through a Solestruck spree by Smoochiezz and received them in exactly 3 week's time. The service provided by Smoochiezz was excellent and very informed, except that I had follow a fixed currency exchange rate of 1.42(USD). If you want to save cost, I'll suggest combining orders with a friend since Solestruck ships free for orders above USD$199.

The new Invisible Shoe isn’t as reflective as the mirrored version, it instead provides a nude view of the foot within. The black structural lines are reminiscent of futuristic fishnets, while the design itself has the sharp geometry that we’d normally see on a Lamborghini.

I decided to recreate her look because purple is my favourite colour. Plus, I'm probably never going to wear this look in public so I went all out at home. ;b

Young starlet of the (in)famous Twilight Saga is known for her emotionless face, bad acting and....

Okay I'm kidding!

I used to be obsessed with Twilight and New Moon during my secondary school days! Recently, I've been looking up on her outfits for various appearances on TV and online articles. Have to admit I'm digging how she puts herself together. Her style is always simple, flawed (in a good way; e.g. tousled hair) and age appropriate. In case you didn't know, she's only 21 years old.

Kristen has dark hair, fair complexion and 1.68m tall. It's quite obvious that she wears mostly dark colours too. I feel that I have similar attributes and preferences and that makes me feel like I can relate to her. Not saying that I look like her! I feel that it's nice to find a someone whose style I can relate to as it will constantly inspire me. Also, whatever works for her would probably work for me too!

When asked what her style was like, she replied to vogue.co.uk:

I have different versions of myself and a standard uniform - I wear jeans. It's cool to have another side of things. I have phases.

Anyone knows the name for the kind of dress she's wearing here? I'm referring to those dresses with an intended elongated waistline. I love how it accentuates her small waist. She wore a trenchcoat to balance out the shortness of her dress. The waistline is not overly low on Kristen, unlike Sarah Jessica Parker's dress that made her look disproportionate:

HERE'S ONE TO ALL THOSE WHO THINKS SNEAKERS DON'T GO WITH DRESSES.

In fact, I think she looks GREAT. She could have gone with sky-topping heels like any other celebrity on the red carpet. Those classic Converse high-cuts are unexpected and made her stand out.

More often than not, I would be criticized in school for wearing sneakers with a dress or skirt. I've been called "weird", "mismatched", and "the Uli style" by my friends for doing so. I don't understand why is there an unspoken rule stating "Dresses only go with flats, sandals or heels". Think Avril Lavigne, Pink, or Hayley Williams - don't they all wear sneakers?

Kristen's gowns:

Kristen's gowns are usually strapless and of floor-sweeping length. She is also very modest when it comes to dressing - avoiding over revealing cuts or plunging necklines.

This royal blue gown is gorgeous! Compared with the grey, blue complements her complexion so much more can't you notice?

Kristen's mini dresses:

There is no reason for Kristen to hide her legs when they go on forever. Besides jeans and long gowns, she is also commonly seen in mini dresses.

My personal favourite!

I am in love with her dress. It's a has asymmetrical sleeves, a mixture of textures and reveals just the right amount of skin.

Kristen looks sultry in lace and red lips. Reminds me a little of Scarlett Johansson.

This outfit would be my second favourite. I believe those silver details are either sequins or hardware. Her messy side-swept hair goes so well with her grungey dress. Again, the unexpected Kristen went with simple black stilettos instead of other sophisticated footwear.

I don't really fancy this dress but the colour looks gorgeous on her. Olive green is one of my favourite colours to wear. While many blondes end up looking dull with this colour, surprisingly, olive green flatters most Asians with dark hair and warm skin. If you have never tried anything close to this, you should!

In my opinion, Kristen's style is simple to follow and very wearable in reality. Here I shall conclude the 4 elements of her style:

Basic black stilettos
If you have noticed, her footwear is very standard with all outfits - black stilettos. It's a fashion staple that goes with everything. Plus, it also elongates and draws all the attention to your legs. I'm guilty to not own one...
Textures
We've seen her in satin, lace, mesh and frills. An outfit does not need colours to stand out. I'm someone who tends to not wear a lot of colours and personally hate colour blocking. A monochromic outfit can be interesting by combining textures. For instance, chiffon + leather (Outfit inspiration).
Imperfections
I love how Kristen never appears to be perfect. By that I mean her messy hair, posing without trying-too-hard etc. Gives her so much personality. Such a down to earth girl!
Minimum accessorizing
From the pictures above, you can hardly spot any accessory except for a ring, watch, bracelet. The focus is solely on her alone. Even when in her gown, she kept to zero accessorizing. Sometimes, less is really more.

What disturbing pictures. As much as I cringe at the sight of Barbie's I-just-killed-my-boyfriend-grin, I can't help but to look into the details over and over again. Went for heavily lined eyes today, with some gold shadow and black outer corners. Lips and cheeks were kept relatively neutral.

Maxi Dress Party

The day my friends and I coincidentally wore maxi dresses to church...

A great maxi dress, in my opinion is something that will never go out of style. The idea of a maxi is simple - a long dress that covers.

Here are 3 reasons why I love maxi dresses:

1. It's figure flattering for everyone, really.
2. It's sexy without revealing much skin.
3. It creates instant motion and drama.

A good fit and one that reflects your personality makes a difference. For instance, girls who are curvy might want to stay away with frills as they give more volume. In general, always try to get something that looks great on its own, even without a belt to clinch the waist. Remember, accessories are optional and should enhance more than it fix.

I will feature 3 kinds of maxi dress that my friends and I wore, and bring you through some other ways I'd personally wear them.

Bernice's Diana Mini

1. Animal print

Whether it's leopard or zebra, animal prints are incredibly dramatic, especially on a maxi dress. It's important to get one with prints that look relatively similar as of leopard skin as the correct colour and print would flatter our skin tone better. I feel that grey leopard prints should be avoided as they don't only look artificial, but doesn't compliment warm skin tones as well. Grey leopard prints make me look extremely tired and dull.

Leopard print maxi dress - Bugis street, $15

Bernice looked beautiful in her maxi dress as the warm tones of her dress really enhanced her skin tone and red hair. She paired it with chunky heels and a waist belt to show off her figure.

I would wear her maxi dress with sandals and braided head band for a bohemian look. I feel that leopard prints look amazing with anything hot pink. Thus, I would go with a bright pink lipstick for a slight pop of colour.

2. Solid colour

If you like your maxi dress to be very versatile, try a solid colour maxi dress. Common choices are black, white and navy blue. Those are fine, but I wanted something that made an impact on its own, yet versatile enough to go with many different things in my wardrobe. This one I have is in fuchsia, which I think really suits my skin tone. Fits me like a glove!

I would also wear it with my leather jacket and boots if I'm feeling grungy. Otherwise, a blazer and some pumps will give it a nice polished look.

3. Floral

Girly, romantic and perfect for summer. Floral dresses are irresistible and such a pretty sight to see! The key to rocking a floral maxi dress is not to over accessorize. Try to keep everything simple; Kaylin accessorized with only earrings. Staying clear of necklaces help draw more attention to her collar bones.

A floral maxi can be toned down by wearing something neutral in colour such as a nude blazer. A well-cut blazer will give more structure and frame the body as contrasted with the flowy movement of a maxi dress. On colder days, a cropped sweater can be worn over and give a more relaxed look.

Don't judge!

It's one of those songs I listened years back everyday on my way to school. It still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it today. I love how the song slowly builds up from acoustic to full blast of drums and power vocals. A love song with slightly 'emo' lyrics without being overly cheesy (unlike B***o M**s). Cough.

I am very lucky to be part of The RA Show as a makeup artist! Filming began at day break. It's been a long time since I last woke up at 5am.

Our first stop was the Esplanade, which looked pretty odd with not a single person around. Well, that's the point. Gradually as the day passed lots of tourists swarmed around and made it frustrating to film. It's really not easy to film anything outdoors in Singapore with the crazy heat.

But overall I had a great time working with all these talented people. Man, 12 hours of hard work produces about 10 minutes of final footage.

Next stop: Waseda Shibuya High School

As the production is about connecting cultures of Singapore and Japan, we got the the chance to visit a Japanese school. It was the school's open house for a charity event themed "Our spirits connecting to the world", which aims to raise funds for the Tohoku earthquake in eastern Japan.

The school compound looked exactly the same as those campuses you saw in Japanese cartoon/anime and Hello Kitty playhouse I used to play with during my childhood. Those Japanese students would greet visitors with high pitched voices and I can't help to say "Kawaii"!

Hand painted work

Students decorated the school with hand painted artworks that shouts originality and hard work. I felt like I was literally walking inside of a scrapbook. I can't imagine the amount of time they put into painting and decorating. You know its true when they say Japanese people are extremely creative and unpredictable.

It was indeed an eye opening experience to soak into the Japanese culture. And that's probably the highlight of the day. For a good 3 hours I felt like I was already in Japan. Hopefully I'll get to travel there one day. Have heard enough stories, I really need to experience Japan for myself!
