Mini Guide To Bangkok

It was my first ever trip to Bangkok earlier this month. My heart was filled with anticipation and trip way exceeded my expectations. I loved everything from the warmness of people, its rich culture and street life. It's no surprise why Bangkok always holds that special place in tourist's hearts.

First meal upon landing - Tom Yum at Siam

Transport

The best to get around in Bangkok is by train and cabs (go by meter) for inconvenient places. Then try tuk-tuks (agreed fare) for a thrill around the city. :)

Accommodation

We stayed in City Lodge Hotel (City Lodge Soi 19 Sukhumvit Road) that is only 3 minutes from from Sukhumvit station and Terminal 21 shopping mall. The room is decently clean and location is excellent, about 15 minutes from Siam via train. For only SGD$50+ a night and a little balcony, I will not complain.

Shopping

You have not gone to Bangkok if you have not shopped and bargained. I'm sure many people have shared their advice but here is my suggested sequence for shopping destinations.

1. Platinum Mall
Fully airconditioned buildings with small stalls. Most comfortable environment out of the rest. It's primary function is wholesale so it's better to buy 2-3 pieces from one store for better discounts. Fashion destination where 80% is female apparel and 20% male. Spend majority of your money for clothes here!

2. Chatuchak Weekend Market
You find anything under the sun here - street food, pets, shoes, bags, handicrafts etc. It's extremely stuffy and warm so make sure to dress light and carry minimal bags. Can find new/vintage apparels at very low prices. Look out for local designer brands if you prefer unique pieces.

2. Siam Square
Last on the list simply because stores here are most expensive. You should only spend your leftovers here. Many designer boutiques and eateries. Night stalls only open in the evening and offer much cheap goods.

Typical boutique in Siam Square that reminds me a lot of Haji Lane.

Sightseeing

The Grand Palace
Thanon Na Phra Lan, Phra Borom Maha Ratchawang, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok 10200, Thailand

*Note: Free outside the palace compound, need to pay admission fee (~SGD$16) to go in.

A must-see if you like to visit religious places. Even if you don't, the architecture alone is enough to make it worthwhile. I believe one should never leave a foreign country without learning about its culture.

It is very important to dress appropriately to respect the religion. If you ever decide to visit, do remember to wear covered clothes that are not too form-fitting. Slippers are fine. But not to worry, clothes are available for loan at no cost.

"Sawadeekaa!"

Dining

Mr Jone's Orphanage
Sukhumvit 55, Thonglor 13

The coziest cafe on Earth. I mean it. I have received tons of questions about this place ever since I posted pictures of it on Instagram.

It's a cafe that offers mainly pastries and cakes but what makes it so special is the fairytale-like ambience.

Huggable teddy bears aren't a rare sight for Mr Jones.

So you might wonder if the food matches up? The answer is yes, if not better. There's so much for you to choose from and my favourites happen to be their cinnamon milkshake and egg custard.

Pretty pastries that are such as delicious as they look.

A must try - smiley egg pudding!

China Town
Yaowarat Road

If you love seafood, be sure to head down to Chinatown (best by cab) and dine in one of the restaurants. Prices are very reasonable but make sure to wear comfortable because it can get really warm!

Vibrant nightlife in Bangkok

Cabbage & Condoms
10 Sukhumvit Soi 12 Bangkok 10110 Thailand

Located along a quiet street, Cabbage & Condoms offers more than just Thai cuisine.

From its name, you would have already guessed its association with condoms. It was derived from an idea of 'Protection should be as accessible as cabbages in the market'. It's definitely something unusual but I promise you that a visit would be worthwhile and educational.

Mannequins dressed completely in condoms

Pineapple fried rice
All proceeds from the restaurant is used to fund development and social welfare activities of Population and Community Development Assosiation (PDA).

Not mentioned on the list:

Yama Herbal Massage (53, Thonglor 55, Wattana, Bangkok, Thailand 10110)
Located on the same street as Mr Jone's Orphanage! Awesome massage services at reasonable prices. You can trust me on this one because we compared all the prices along the street. Shower is provided if you dislike massage oil to remain on your skin.

So there's my mini guide to Bangkok! Four days was not enough to appreciate what the city has to offer but we tried our best! Thanks to my boyfriend who did lots of research of places that are uncommon among tourists.

Lucite & Lace

Hello everyone!

I'm actually blogging right from Phnom Penh, Cambodia! In the midst of a busy study trip, I'm glad I could squeeze out some time to write a post for you guys. Everything is so different here in Cambodia; the traffic, pace of lifestyle, food, culture and more. I love that they have Starbucks tub ice-cream in supermarkets! (haven't tried one though)

This is one of those outfits whereby the focus is on mixing shapes and textures but sticking to one colour. You guys know how much I love lace and leather. They go lovely together because lace easily injects femininity to any outfit.

What I like most about this lace blouse is that the inner spaghetti top is attached to the lace overlay, yay to decently dressed girls! Because wearing a black bra underneath a lace top is just unattractive and an eyesore.

Broderie Lace Blouse - Dressabelle | Pelplum skirt - Love Bonito | Earrings - H&M

The length of this peplum skirt is great even for work. I love medium length skirts! I always think that buying separates are better than dresses because you can always mix and match with clothes you already have. Also, I'm wearing my JC Soirees that are decently comfortable.

Soiree silver heels - Jeffrey Campbell (similar here)

I'm wearing MAC lipstick in Speak Louder.

Paint Me a Universe

Ever since the galaxy print was introduced to the world by Christopher Kane, I have been waiting and waiting to get my hands on anything galaxy. With my recent purchases from BlackMilk, I'm only hungry for more. Let's all pretend that we're aliens from outer space!

Midnight Galaxy dress - Dressabelle | Turban - gifted from Zheng Ning

Love it or loathe it, don't deny that your eyes aren't naturally drifted towards unconventional prints. I think the trick to rock galaxy prints is to pick only ONE. It's much better to incorporate galaxy prints minimally than have them top to toe (well I'm guilty sometimes). Otherwise, it might look overly cheesy.

I'm wearing Lime Crime's Opaque lipstick in Airborne Unicorn.

For my case, I am never missing a pair of fierce, statement shoes. Since my arms are bare, I stacked on metallic accessories. Crazy lip colour is optional! Do you like my turban? ^^

Clinic wedges (in the style of Jeffrey Campbell) - TaoBao

Those who have asked me about this pair of shoes, you might want to know that those wedges are detaching themselves. Believe your mother when she tells you "you get what you pay for".

If you have been on the search of a perfect galaxy dress that can be layered even in this hot weather, why not settle for this one when it's only $26? A pretty good deal I'd say.

Dressabelle is giving away one piece of Midnight Galaxy Dress on their site, so if you are keen, be sure to visit Dressabelle.livejournal.com!

Giveaway Status: Closed. Winner is Tarilyn Yeo and has been notified through email.

{I will be giving away this Peter Pan Lace dress to one reader. See details on how to participate at the end of this post.}

Peter Pan Lace dress - Dressabelle | Hat - Payless

Hello, lovely people!

I was very much amused by how ladies in the olden days always had a handkerchief in their pockets or bags. My mother told me during her times, women in Shanghai would spray their silk handkerchiefs with 花露水 (a.k.a. 'Florida water') during the summer. It's a cologne of light flowery scents and often contained notes of lavender or clove. I loved the cologne when I was little because mother would use a few drops in my bathwater to refresh me.

Mom's vintage silk handkerchief

I'm not sure how many people still use handkerchiefs nowadays. But I can't help but to appreciate just how delicate and beautiful it is as an accessory. I chose to pick a floral one to go with my Peter Pan dress. Those oversized collars are so cute and classy!

As many of my readers would have already known, I have been creating looks for Dressabelle for a long time. Dressabelle and I have decided to give away this exact same dress to one of you!

This is also a way I can express my thanks to those of you who have been appreciating the contents I have been writing. This is my first ever giveaway, I really hope all of you will participate!

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart

I took the stars from my eyes and then I made a map
And knew that somehow I could find my way back
Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too
So I stayed in the darkness with you.

Galaxy purple leggings - BlackMilk | Cape top - Kate Love | Pascal boots - Dr Martens

Lime Crime lipstick in Airborne Unicorn

Well I really hope I did BlackMilk justice.

These leggings, I can't even...express my love for them in words. Looking at them is like looking into space; is that an image or optical illusion? I couldn't have gone wrong with black top and boots. Traditional, but I'm sure I'll find more ways to rock them on the streets. They get me plenty of stares from curious people too.

For those who always wondered about:

The fit - just follow their size chart and measure accordingly then you won't go wrong. They are very stretchable so when in doubt, size down.
The material - it's hard to describe but the closest would probably be swimsuit, but a lot smoother to touch, not as smooth as satin. Fabric is very breathable - you can feel wind passing through if you stand infront of a fan.

A cup of Cappuccino - the perfect thing for Sunday afternoons.

Double flare

Do you like peplum tops? I do! And this particular one has sparrows on them, how cute? So I matched it with my sparrow earrings. (running out of creativity) I'm pretty impressed with the cutting and material of my blouse! It's super silky and lightweight...promise to not cause excessive (and embarrassing) perspiration on humid days.

Sparrow Pelplum Blouse - Dressabelle | Bootcut jeans - ASOS

The past week has been crazy for me. It's been a long while since I last watched a movie in my bed with camomile tea and snacks. When I'm studying for exams, my mind constantly plans to reorganize my wardrobe/ read a book etc. But when I finally have free time, I'd never get to what I have planned for myself . It's funny how I only yearn for simple pleasures in life when I am occupied.

Jelly stilettos - Melissa
Did you guys notice there aren't any zippers on my jeans? It's like jeggings! Fits me like a glove and extremely comfortable.

It's the weekends again! I am spending my weekends dressing up, going to church and doing what I love - makeup assignment!

How are you spending yours?
