Back To School

Guess what, I am back to school after a well deserved break! I am getting my geek mode back on, determined to be a good student for the rest of my uni days. One of the biggest anxieties for most, whether it's for your first day of school, internship or work is deciding what to wear. Including myself. We all want to look our best without ending up like an awkward turtle or overly flamboyant. You sorta want to 'test the waters' before showing everyone what you've got right? You get my idea.

Khaki work pants - c/o Dressabelle

What I have learnt over the years: It is always better to be overdressed than underdressed. No arguments on that! I believe dressing up is a form of respect towards all the new people you're about to meet. The tricky part is how to look great and 100% comfortable at the same time. It may not be obvious but in fact, worrying about your mini skirt riding up or spilling curry on a white dress are more energy consuming than you think.

For that, I always prefer to wear pants on my first days. Instead of jeans (which I often prefer), try the khaki pant for a more polished, preppier look. I can sit down, run up the stairs and deal with my tote bag, hand carried laptop and not spare a single thought into a possibility of 'accidents'. On my first days, I think khaki is better than black because it makes you appear more approachable. No one likes an overly serious member, it's already awkward enough starting conversations!

Collar shirt - Vintage | Oversized blazer - G2000

More often than not, your work place is colder than you expected. Blame it on central air-cons. Ever since school started, I have been carrying an outer wear with me daily. I like to work with layerable pieces because it's far more flexible than wearing a thick sweater alone, especially when the weather suddenly gets hot. A plain white shirt is a safe choice for everyone, reflects plenty of light onto the face!

Vintage Cadali  Taylor watch - c/o Late Rabbit

The best accessory has to be a watch for me. Although Late Rabbit sent me this vintage Cadali watch intended for a feature, I genuinely adore it and have been wearing it all the time ever since. As I have mentioned before, what I love most is its ultra thin leather strap followed by the minimal watch face. There's nothing not to love about this beautiful piece of jewelry that is functional as well. If you're too into rare vintage watches, I urge you to give them a visit.

Smooch! flats - c/o O'ORO | Socks - Tutu Anna

Although you guys see me wearing a lot of heels in my posts, it is so much better to wear flats in school. Especially on the first week when I have to walk loads exploring the compound. You'd catch me in boots most of the time but these playful flats (can you tell that's a lip?!) will add a burst of colour on those gloomy days. Plus it'll look super cute with a red lip!

P.S. I love pants that fit without the aid of a belt. Those double buttons look darn smart!

Fringe mocassin boots - Taobao

You might remember the same backdrop from the previous post named 'The Free Spirit', and yes we decided to come back again to shoot. While many parts of the world is experiencing heat wave at this period of time, I think Singapore (where it's crazy hot normally) is blessed to enjoy a surprisingly breezy summer. And because of that, I can't help but to drift into the mood of dressing for fall. Overall, I just prefer fall fashion so much more than the cheery summer pastels.

I absolutely love the horses on my dress. When printed on a three-dimensional, almost origami style skirt, it becomes such a statement piece. Don't you just associate moving horses with fringe and flowy things? I kept to an overall warm colour palette and since the dress's satin material looks quite formal on its own, the loose knit top really tones all that seriousness down. When I see a nice dress, I don't worry too much if I'd ever find an appropriate occasion for it because I know that anything can be adapted if you find the right pairings.

Roccoco Kent Vintage

Overview of Roccoco Kent as you enter the store

Fun Fact 1. Roccoco Kent does not hold any special meaning. It was named after the owner's (female) pet dog, and 'Kent' was added to make it sound more masculine.

I'm always on the hunt for  thrift and vintage shops in Singapore. Vintage shopping is like walking into a museum of old, relatable things that tell a story and available for sale. From the positive response I've gotten from previous thrifting/ vintage shopping posts, I have since made a commitment to document my visits so you guys can go too! Not everything interesting in Singapore is easy to find. For this, I owe it to Nigel for always being able to discover quirky places that tend to be hidden from the majority. Read on!

Roccoco Kent
753 North Bridge Road #02-02, Tangerine S(198721)

First up, vintage furniture. In the furniture section you can find big pieces of furniture mainly sourced locally. The shop itself is tiny but do not underestimate its size...it holds a good amount of things that'll keeps your eyes moving for at least half an hour. Personally I consider all vintage shops as a good source of interior inspiration because no matter how much junk it holds, the thoughtful owner always make it charming somehow. Organization in chaos, you know?

Fun Fact 2. The robot (bottom right hand corner in the pic below) was used to serve Sushi in a restaurant. That explains the tray!

Moving on to the vintage clothes and accessories section. Apparels were quite limited but there was a good collection of vintage bags ranging from brandless to Chanel and YSL. Jewelry were a joy to look at too and some of the items were tagged with its respective era, which is always fun to know.

Fun Fact 3. That is a skull of a deer.

Fun Fact 4: The above is a (professionally) restored  vintage school desk.

Overall, I really enjoyed my vintage rummaging at RK and learning about owner Emmeline's love for collecting vintage. She's such a friendly person to chat with and willing to share her knowledge with amateur vintage shoppers like me. Nothing beats the feeling of heading down to a vintage shop physically.

Be sure to add Roccoco Kent to your to-go-list, no more excuses for saying "I have nowhere to go"!

Fun Fact 5. Nigel purchased a framed wall clock from the seventies.
