Raw

I have always wanted to shoot my outfits in a raw, industrial environment and today my dream came true. One disadvantage being a fashion blogger in a city is being deprived of untouched and abandoned environment. More often than not, gardens were man made, empty spaces forcefully plastered with advertisements. I think the clean concrete walls and dusty floors for today's shoot is a breather from most of my other photos.

Today I'm going back to one of my old classic styles – the juxtaposition of tough and delicate. I've mentioned a million times about how leather and chiffon is my favourite combination in styling. I love the romantic rose graphics on the sweater which really stands out against the dark background. I also love 3/4 length sleeves because they never get in the way of things (such as washing dishes). Of course, there are endless ways to wear a sweater, and one great way is pairing it with loose maxi skirts. My salmon pink complements my skin tone really well and prevented me from looking too 'weighed' down by black pieces.

Dressing up is really about wearing what you feel good about and I am all about offending your vision with unexpected jewelry. Gotta admit, I love it when people tells me, "I don't understand why you're wearing this". Well that's exactly the point. It's totally okay to wear costume jewelry on any plain outfit, as long as you look polished overall.

Mini backpack - c/o O'ORO

As some of you might know, I have scoliosis which gives me a lot of backaches. More and more I find myself carrying backpacks simply because it distributes weight evenly on my shoulders. I carry a huge one for school, and this mini one I'm carrying is a lifesaver on days when I'm carrying loads but don't want my outfit to look mismatched. We all have a problem with cute canvas backpacks that looks to casual for a night out, right? My backpack cannot get more stylish with these reptile imprints on the front flap and classic gold hardware. Oh and did I mention, it's convertible to a cute sling bag too! Genius. Not that I will but definitely a treat to the fickle minded.

That's it for today! And if you have enjoyed my recent posts' photography and have always wondered who's behind the lens, here she is!

1920's Flapper

Baroque Knit Dress - c/o Dressabelle

Following up with the last blog post which I dressed up as Sherlock Holmes, the mini Halloween series can only get more exciting. Presenting to you, my interpretation of the flapper girl in the roaring twenties. I also associate the twenties with silent films, luxury and opulence. With the screening of The Great Gatsby this year, it's almost impossible to ignore this contagious style that is so nostalgic, yet surprisingly relevant to wear even a century later.

I have to admit that dressing up as a flapper was incredibly fun. Especially for the makeup! If you're clueless about flapper girl makeup, this makeup tutorial by Michelle Phan will save you precious time. In short, a rounded smokey eye, thinly drawn eyebrows and an unrealistic cupids bow will do the job. Flapper girls always had some sort of fancy headpiece; whether it's an embellished crown, cloche hat or feather clip, they'll all work perfectly.

Fringe skirt (layered underneath) - Forever 21

I was very much inspired by The Great Gatsby to create this look, and those who guessed it right on my Instagram, yes it's specifically Jordan Baker. Since I have a similar hairstyle, it tied my look together with greater resemblance. Flapper girls always had a straight, boyish silhouette. Dresses varied from midi straight to low backs but they usually had lightweight hemlines to emphasize their groove on the dance floor. My dress was made in 2013 and obviously wasn't long enough for the flapper look. But a fringe skirt layered underneath solved everything. I bet you thought it was part of the dress if I have not told you!

Vintage Vince Camuto heels - thrifted from Salvation Army

I may be the worst dancer on this planet but a tasteful pair of T-bar dance shoes would save me from looking like an oddball if I really were a flapper girl. The classy appeal of T-straps is irreplaceable by any other. I really am obsessed with this semi-lucite silver one that I've thrifted awhile back. Isn't its ultra thin ankle straps the most delicate thing? Lastly, a flapper girl cannot be without her pearls. If you have always had an obsession with pearls, now is your time to pile them on. More the better!

Fun fact: Did you know flapper girls used to drape long chains of pearls down their boxy shaped dresses to visually lengthen their torso in order to look more streamlined?

Halloween is a fun festival for everyone, even if you're like me who refuses to spend a penny on costumes. From my last two posts, you can clearly see that you don't necessarily need costumes to join the fun. I literally grab stuff I already own, because why not? Stay safe, take loads of selfies and go crazy. Happy Halloween!

Oversized cocoon coat - H&M

How is everyone coping with the sudden downpour in Singapore? I'm obviously not feeling too well with a headache, but the good thing is getting the chance to pile on ridiculous layers. Halloween is just around the corner and I'm all about getting into character; in a fashionable way of course! If you're shy like me who doesn't wish to go all costumey, select pieces you already have and putting them together can suggest a good Halloween appropriate outfit too. Can you guess what's mine? (Hint: I'm missing a magnifying glass.)

I'm Sherlock Holmes the detective! I know, a newspaper is not enough to tell you I'm a detective. Bad props on my part. I've always been fascinated with the classic detective/ spy attire because I'm always wondering what's hiding under their oversized coats.

Collar shirt - G2000 | Cropped 3/4 pants - Uniqlo

Knit pullover - c/o Dressabelle

A classic spy is never complete without layering a collar shirt under a vest of some sort. Keeping the look classy and muted, I picked a v-neck sweater with retro patterns to pair with a shirt of the same colour family. If you're going all out or just loving the Teddy Boy look, add on a skinny tie!

Cap - Fourskin

Western tip flats - ASOS | Frill socks - Topshop

It would be rather unsightly if I spoilt the outfit with a pair of heels, so here goes a rather androgynous looking pair of leather flats. I think shoes are super important to tie the whole look together. Brogues will work nicely for a Sherlock Holmes outfit too!

Ending off with a silly Charlie Chaplin jump for no particular reason. Happy weekends!

The harsh mid-noon lighting may be a nightmare to most photographers but we decided to make the most out of what we had by playing with shadows. They say "Life threw me some lemons so I made some lemonade!" – one of my favourite quotes to go by a shitty day.

The idea of peek-a-boo has always existed for fashion, evident in common items like the peep toe shoes and cut out backs. Leave the rest to your imagination. Working around that idea, I chose a classic midi dress which has an unexpected mesh detail round my knees. I thought it was fun to inject peek-a-boo elements into my bag and shoes as well. Yes...I admit that I'm not quite over lucite things. I think they're so modern and attracts a curious eye.

Topshop's Aurora

I'm constantly looking for small doses of happiness to get me through hectic work weeks. And by happiness, a beauty addict refers to nail polishes and lipsticks. Mmm hmm...we're all guilty of that, don't lie. It's my first time purchasing Topshop nail polishes and pretty satisfied so far. The 'Aurora' one was what caught my eye and probably the strangest nail color I own to date. It has a copper base with hints of blue and green, reflects beautifully under natural sunlight. But then again I'd very much prefer to call it 'that oil slick color', just cause it makes more sense right? The consistency is watery while still pigmented; exactly what I like. Overall, I'm really loving it on my nails or simply admiring how pretty it looks sitting on my desk.
