It's officially less than a month to Nigel and I's month long Europe trip. I'm feeling jittery and excited, making endless lists in my head. I can hardly contain myself, because I have never travelled out of Asia (besides to the middle east that one time) in my entire life, neither have I spent a month away from home. But it feels great to run away, get a change of scenery and open my eyes to the real world where it's cruel yet filled  with forgiveness. Imagine meeting strangers whom I would begin friendships afresh, reside in a temporary apartment where I can myself and it's okay. No strings attached. Imagine seeing Victorian castles and historic European architecture all in front of me...how I have dreamt all these years and they're finally turning into reality. Can I take the adrenaline when it comes? Will I be quick to document and secure those memories forever? Or should I stay still and live in the moment? Will my eyes capture all that happens in a day? This sense of rebellion and need for adventure; maybe that's what drives people forward in their twenties. I never want to lose this passion. Perhaps, the wild wild world out there is simply a better place than home for now.

Valentia

It's been a good past four days of Chinese New Year long weekend. Love it or hate it, it's probably unlikely to avoid CNY completely unless you decide to take a vacay (smart move you guys). While the festive season does arrive with certain awkward social situations, unwanted questions from the older folks or extra calories you've worked all year round to kill...there are also lots to love.

For instance, I visited the annual Chinatown market for the first time in my life and had a blast! Who would have thought I loved crowd if not for the merry atmosphere? Local pastries are heaven sent; the average looking tarts are way underrated by appearance in their cheap plastic containers, surprising me with its rich buttery aftertaste every single time.

Well I think most importantly, the majority of us here are interested in CNY #OOTDs, right? Sorry to disappoint you guys because I'm far over from my rebellious teenage years of black new year ensembles. No edgy statements here. For my foreign friends who aren't informed – it's Chinese belief to wear auspicious colours such as red for good luck and avoiding black during CNY as it represents mourning.  Now that I'm older, I'm more adhering to dressing up for the occasion. Gone are the days of pissing elders on purpose. Thinking back, that was really a foolish thing to do.

Anyhow, I love dressing up thematically whenever I get a chance. To welcome the year of the Goat, I felt like this white lace dress was a romantic and beautiful piece to wear. A halter necklace has always been very flattering on my body shape, and what I really love about this dress is its asymmetrical hemline. Its precise tapering – curved on front, angular at the back – is a lovely detail that makes the dress feminine. Despite not having the most ideal footwear option, the jade bangles gave this outfit an Asian flavor and luminosity. Can't emphasise enough how accessories are so important for plain garments.

Project Week Uniform

Turtle neck crop top - ASOS
Leather jacket - Taiwan
Midi skirt - c/o KLARRA
Leather pointed flats - ASOS

Project week – love it or hate it, to me it's just a battle of freedom and responsibilities. I wake up, realise I should have woken up earlier, make myself a coffee, start getting ready for project meetings, wish I could just stay at home...the mental war goes on. Sounds familiar? Okay the ranting stops here. On a positive note, I'm happy to have gotten enough sleep this week, and even managed to shoot this outfit post for you amidst all that to-dos. A shout out to Faith for helping me out with the photos! This is what I wore to school for a project meeting. If you have been noticing from my Instagram, I'm having a serious turtle neck phase at the moment. I wear my turtle necks with everything, and my inner hoarder is urging me to stock up in every colour. Not sure if it's due to my excitement for the launch of the new iPhone (um, in honor of Steve Jobs, ok?) or it's the merciless air conditioner in school. My poor exposed neck feels like it's about to trigger a cough all the time. Then, as part of my 'uniform', the midi skirt and flats come in. Flats because I'm always rushing for time and midi skirts because they're my favourite. I pretty much live in midi skirts, jeans and trousers at school. My latest midi addition is one that's stark and graphical yet surprisingly versatile with my existing wardrobe. The pattern of what looks like brush strokes injects energy, resembling abstract expressionism art from the 60s. Always love an unexpected touch!

Nylon Japan Feature: June

So the first half of the year has officially passed by... I'll wrap it up with my second Nylon Japan, June issue! It was definitely more than exciting to see myself again in a hardcopy magazine, almost surreal to be part of such a large publication. If you managed to catch me, great! If not, no need to worry because I'll be listing down outfit information for each.

I cannot read Japanese but I was asked for an interview and below were my exact response to the journalist. Not sure if the published chunk was edited in any (or was it even published? can't tell lol) way but here goes:

Name: Uli Chan
Age: 21
Height: 1.67m
Q: Please tell me the point for each outfit. what care when you chose the outfit each situation!
Relaxed - must be comfortable and easy for me to move around. My favourite casual pieces are jeans and sneakers. I also love white tees with unexpected details. White T-shirt and jeans is a classic combination.
Work - I don't 'work' in a corporate environment but I think generally I like clothes that are more structured. I love blazers even in hot weather haha! I also think that covered shoes are most appropriate for work, simply because they look more professional.
Date night - I always dream of wearing heels but in reality I wear flats more often. Luckily my boyfriend is very liberal with my fashion choices, I sometimes dress androgynously even on dates! On most dates, I think a midi skirt and crop top is super pretty.
Night out - truth is, I am a couch potato who is more likely to stay in and watch YouTube videos. But if I were to go out, I'd definitely wear my leather skirt and boots.

Q: Tell me your biography.
I am a fashion student in Singapore. I lived in Shanghai, China for about 4 years before I came here to study. Currently, I write a blog called ULIMALI and I love cats. My fashion style is feminine, polished and unconventional.
